AREC 2009: OBJECTIVES
Provide a forum for Africans and the international community to meet, reflect take decisions and actions on remittances in view of enhancing the utilization of remittances as a tool for Africa’s economic growth :
- Examine the reasons why Africa currently benefits so little from this new global source of wealth (7% in 2006).
- Seek ways by which Africa could raise its gains on remittances from the 7% in 2006 to 40% in 2020.
- Create links between African governments as they take concerted actions towards designing policies and programmes on Remittances.
- Learn from the experiences of countries which have adopted policies and systems to favour increased remittance flows.
- Establish links between Africa and its Diaspora, the primary sources of remittances to Africa.
- Examine ways of means of improving the ways remittances reaching Africa are used by the populations.
- Adapt the products of remittance service providers to the needs and realities of Africa.
Seek possible new paradigms on how development aid, direct foreign investment and remittances could, together, contribute in enhancing Africa’s development :
- Strengthen understanding of the possible links between African economies, international aid and remittances.
- Establish links between development aid programmes, foreign direct investment and remittances for Africa’s economic development.
